Can 365 Farming Families Build Cambodia’s Next Major Coffee Origin?
Mondulkiri’s coffee sector once centered on roughly 365 farming households. That is small by global standards—but large enough to build an origin.
A coffee origin does not begin with millions of bags. It begins with a group of farmers producing something that buyers can recognize and buy again.
In 2023, Mondulkiri officials reported approximately 365 households and a company cultivating coffee across 525 hectares. SNV later reported that Kofi had begun sourcing from 365 farmers, rising to 484 farmers by late 2025.
Small networks can move faster
A supplier network of several hundred farmers is still small enough for direct training, traceability and coordinated quality programs.
That matters for Fine Robusta. If a buyer wants farmers to pick a higher percentage of ripe cherries, improve pruning, use agroforestry, separate lots or deliver cherries quickly after harvest, implementation is easier in a defined network.
The challenge is consistency between farms
One farmer may pick only ripe red cherries. Another may mix ripe, green and overripe fruit. When coffee from many farms is combined, inconsistent harvesting can weaken the entire lot.
That is why training and buying standards matter.
Infrastructure turns households into an origin
Farmers need common infrastructure: collection points, processing, drying, storage, cupping, grading and export preparation.
SNV’s Mondulkiri project focused on these missing pieces, supporting farmer training, a seedling nursery and a coffee processing facility in the production area.
Origin identity is built through repetition
A buyer trying Mondulkiri coffee once is not enough. The real test is whether the buyer can return the following harvest and receive a coffee that still feels recognizably Mondulkiri.
For a premium emerging origin, the goal should not be maximum scale at the beginning. It should be maximum credibility.
Mondulkiri does not need to become a giant coffee region before the world notices it. It needs to become a consistent one.
