From One 80.5-Point Lot to an Origin: What Cambodia Must Prove Next
CQI Sample 939618 gives Cambodia a verifiable 80.50-point Robusta milestone. It does not yet define a national origin. The next step is a multi-harvest evidence system covering lot identity, sensory repeatability, processing, environment, traceability, commercial availability and independent evaluation.
Cambodia now has something that an emerging coffee origin rarely gets at the beginning of its story: a specific, independently identifiable quality reference.
Coffee Quality Institute’s public database contains Q Certified Robusta Sample 939618 from Cambodia. The record gives a score of 80.50, identifies KOFI as the company, records the 2023/2024 harvest, TR4 variety, Dry Ferment processing, 700 metres altitude, Lot K001 and four 60-kilogram bags. The certificate record lists an expiration date of 31 July 2025.
That is real evidence.
It is also only one sample.
The distinction is central to everything Cambodia does next.
A single evaluated lot can prove capability. It cannot prove repeatability, define a regional flavor profile, establish a national grade or tell an international buyer what the next shipment will taste like.
If Cambodia wants to move from “a country that once produced an 80.5-point Robusta” to a recognized Fine Robusta origin, the next chapter should be built around a more demanding question:
Can Cambodia reproduce, explain and commercially deliver quality across multiple lots and harvests?
That requires more than higher scores. It requires an evidence architecture.
What Sample 939618 actually proves
The strength of Sample 939618 is its specificity.
It is not a press-release adjective. It has a sample number, harvest year, variety, process, altitude, lot number, bag count and evaluation record.
That specificity allows OCC to say something precise:
A KOFI Cambodian Robusta lot from the 2023/2024 harvest, identified as TR4 and Dry Ferment at 700 metres, received a Q Certified Robusta score of 80.50 in CQI’s historical system.
Public reporting then made the achievement visible. In August 2024, the Phnom Penh Post reported Mondulkiri Robusta processed by KOFI receiving Fine Robusta recognition and described the development as a first for Cambodia.
The chronology matters because later 2025 publicity around Bousra should not be treated as the beginning of the quality record. The sample itself and 2024 public reporting predate that later commercial communication.
But the most important correction is conceptual rather than chronological.
The sample proves one coffee.
It does not prove:
- that every KOFI lot scores 80.50 or above;
- that all Bousra coffee has the same sensory profile;
- that all Mondulkiri Robusta is Fine Robusta;
- that TR4 alone caused the result;
- that Dry Ferment alone caused the result; or
- that Cambodia already has a stable national Fine Robusta profile.
Those are separate hypotheses that require separate data.
A score is a milestone; repeatability is an origin
Coffee origins become commercially meaningful when buyers can form expectations.
A buyer does not need every harvest to taste identical. Agriculture is seasonal. Weather, plant physiology and processing change.
But the buyer does need to understand the range of variation.
That is the difference between an exceptional sample and an origin system.
Research on Coffea canephora shows why multi-year evaluation matters. A 2024 Frontiers study examined the sensory profiles of 70 Robusta genotypes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Twenty-two genotypes were evaluated across two consecutive years specifically to assess sensory consistency. The researchers found evidence that sensory profiles for those genotypes could remain consistent across harvest years, while also documenting substantial variation among genetic material.
Cambodia does not need to reproduce that exact study design. It should adopt the same logic.
If a Mondulkiri lot tastes excellent once, record it.
If comparable lots perform similarly across two or three harvests, the evidence becomes stronger.
If different farms and processors begin showing recurring sensory characteristics, the conversation can move from “this sample” toward “this origin”.
Proof layer 1: identify every lot before talking about the origin
The first requirement is mundane and non-negotiable: lot identity.
Future Cambodian quality records should preserve, at minimum:
- unique lot or sample ID;
- harvest year and, where useful, harvest window;
- farm, farmer group or collection area;
- variety or known planting material;
- altitude or location range;
- processing method;
- drying method;
- prepared volume;
- physical quality data;
- sensory evaluation method; and
- evaluator or laboratory identity.
Without those fields, scores become detached from the coffee that produced them.
Sample 939618 is useful precisely because much of this metadata exists.
Cambodia should make that level of specificity normal rather than exceptional.
Proof layer 2: repeat the result across lots within the same harvest
One harvest can contain many different coffees.
Different farms may have different soils, shade, plant age, picking practices and varieties. Different collection days may have different cherry maturity. Processing batches may experience different temperatures, fermentation times or drying conditions.
If Cambodia wants to know whether 80.50 represents a repeatable capability, it should evaluate more than the best-selected sample.
A useful annual programme could include multiple lots from the same processor, multiple producer groups and, where possible, repeated batches using the same process.
The goal is not to produce a marketing average.
The goal is to understand distribution.
How many lots are clean?
How wide is the quality range?
Which defects recur?
Which sensory descriptors recur?
Which processing batches drift?
A country learns more from ten well-documented lots ranging from 78 to 83 than from one anonymous “85+” claim.
The distribution reveals the production system.
Proof layer 3: repeat across harvest years
Multi-harvest evidence is the point at which an origin starts becoming predictable.
A single season can be unusually favorable. Another can be unusually difficult.
At least two or three years of comparable records begin to separate persistent characteristics from one-season effects.
For Cambodia, the priority should be to follow specific farms, varieties and processing protocols over time rather than constantly replacing the dataset with only the newest winning sample.
A simple longitudinal table could track:

The result would be much more valuable than three isolated scores.
It would show what changed—and what did not.
Proof layer 4: separate genetics, environment and processing
The most dangerous origin stories assign causality too quickly.
Sample 939618 is TR4, Dry Ferment and 700 metres.
It is tempting to say one of those variables “created” the 80.50.
The evidence does not support that conclusion.
Coffee quality emerges from interacting variables.
Genetics matters. Environment matters. Cherry maturity matters. Farm management matters. Fermentation and drying matter. Roast and evaluation preparation matter.
Canephora research increasingly demonstrates how strongly post-harvest processing can shift sensory expression. A 2024 review in _Frontiers in Food Science and Technology_ synthesised research showing that fermentation methods and microbial activity can alter the chemical and sensory characteristics of Coffea canephora. A separate 2024 _Food Bioscience_ study found that self-induced anaerobic fermentation treatments changed Canephora chemistry and sensory expression, with some treatments producing more fruity or differentiated profiles.
That does not mean Cambodia should chase extreme fermentation.
It means processing must be recorded as an experimental variable, not hidden behind the origin name.
The same principle applies to environment.
Mondulkiri already has a useful peer-reviewed baseline. A 2021 _Sustainability_ study of three Sen Monorom Robusta plantations documented local altitude, temperature, rainfall, shade and soil-moisture conditions and compared shaded with sunny systems.
Future quality research can build on that foundation by connecting agronomic variables with sensory outcomes.
The question should become:
Under which combinations of variety, site, harvest condition and processing does Mondulkiri repeatedly produce its strongest coffees?
That is an origin research question.
Proof layer 5: move beyond a single total score
The coffee industry’s evaluation language is changing.
The Specialty Coffee Association’s Coffee Value Assessment, or CVA, separates coffee evaluation into several complementary dimensions: physical assessment, descriptive sensory assessment, affective quality assessment and extrinsic information such as traceability and processing.
The updated SCA Q Grader programme launched in October 2025 after management of the programme transitioned from CQI to SCA. The new programme is grounded in CVA.
This matters for Cambodia because Sample 939618 belongs to the historical CQI Q Robusta system. It remains valuable evidence of what that sample achieved under that system, but future datasets should clearly record which protocol was used and when.
More importantly, Cambodia should not make “80+” the entire objective.
A richer dataset asks:
Physical: What are moisture, defects, size and preparation characteristics?
Descriptive: What does the coffee actually smell, taste and feel like?
Affective: How is the quality perceived by trained evaluators or target buyers?
Extrinsic: What is known about origin, farm, variety, process, traceability and production conditions?
Two coffees with the same numerical score can have very different commercial value if their sensory profiles serve different markets.
For an emerging origin, description may ultimately be more powerful than score inflation.
Proof layer 6: build a Mondulkiri sensory dataset
An origin becomes memorable when buyers know what to look for.
Cambodia is not yet in a position to declare a single “Mondulkiri flavor profile.” There are too few public multi-lot, multi-harvest datasets.
That is an opportunity.
Rather than inventing tasting notes from marketing language, Cambodia can build the profile empirically.
Each lot can be recorded using standardized broad descriptors—fruity, floral, nutty/cocoa, sweet, spice, fermented, green/vegetative, roasted, body/texture and aftertaste—alongside more specific notes where useful.
After enough samples, patterns can be analysed by:
- variety;
- farm or sub-region;
- altitude;
- harvest date;
- natural, washed or other processing;
- fermentation treatment;
- drying method; and
- harvest year.
If cocoa and spice recur across unrelated lots, that becomes interesting.
If fruit intensity appears only under one controlled fermentation, that is processing evidence rather than a regional trait.
If one variety remains distinctive across multiple sites and years, that becomes genetic evidence.
The purpose of the dataset is to stop guessing which category each observation belongs to.
Proof layer 7: show commercial availability beside quality
A beautiful sample does not automatically become a sourcing category.
Sample 939618 lists four 60-kilogram bags. That is 240 kilograms associated with the sample record.
For origin development, future reporting should distinguish between:
- evaluation sample size;
- experimental lot size;
- total prepared lot volume;
- repeatable commercial volume; and
- total annual production.
These numbers answer different questions.
A roaster buying 60 kilograms can work with a micro-lot that would be irrelevant to an importer needing a container programme. A producer may repeat a sensory profile at 300 kilograms but struggle to reproduce it at ten tonnes.
Scale introduces its own quality problems: mixed maturity, larger drying surfaces, more fermentation batches, storage variation and lot blending.
Cambodia therefore has to prove not only that quality exists, but how quality behaves as volume increases.
The honest commercial sentence is not “Cambodia can supply Fine Robusta.”
It is “this specific lot is available at this volume with this evidence.”
Repeat that sentence across multiple suppliers and seasons, and an origin market begins to exist.
Proof layer 8: independent evaluation and buyer replication
Producer and processor data are essential, but independent replication strengthens credibility.
Future Cambodian lots should ideally be evaluated by more than one calibrated panel or buyer when practical.
That does not mean every coffee needs multiple certificates.
It means the origin should accumulate records showing whether different qualified evaluators broadly agree on the coffee’s descriptive characteristics and quality level.
Buyer feedback is especially valuable because commercial relevance is not identical to laboratory recognition.
World Coffee Research’s 2023 Robusta quality focus group brought together buyers from major coffee companies specifically to understand what quality improvements they want from Canephora. That work reflects an important reality: a breeding or processing programme only creates market value when the resulting coffees fit real buyer needs.
For Cambodia, independent buyer trials could test specific applications:
- 100% Canephora espresso;
- espresso blends;
- milk beverages;
- filter preparation;
- cold brew; and
- roasted retail formats.
The same coffee may have different value in each context.
An origin evidence system should capture that instead of assuming one score predicts every use.
What Cambodia should publish each harvest
A practical public-origin report does not need to reveal confidential commercial terms.
It could publish an anonymised or permissioned annual dataset with fields such as:
- Number of lots evaluated.
- Number of farms or producer groups represented.
- Varieties represented.
- Processing methods represented.
- Physical-quality ranges.
- Descriptive sensory frequencies.
- Affective-quality distribution.
- Number of independently evaluated lots.
- Commercial volume ranges.
- Year-over-year repeatability observations.
The key is to publish the full range, not only the winners.
If five lots fail because of drying defects, that is useful origin intelligence.
If one processing protocol repeatedly improves cleanliness, that is useful.
If a variety performs well one year and poorly the next, that is useful.
A research culture turns inconsistency into learning rather than hiding it.
What OCC can contribute
OCC is not the certification body, producer or buyer.
Our useful role is to maintain the evidence map.
That means distinguishing:
- historical CQI records from current SCA evaluation systems;
- company claims from independent records;
- a sample score from an origin claim;
- sensory description from quality preference;
- experimental volume from commercial availability; and
- recurring evidence from one-off observations.
OCC can also preserve chronology.
For Sample 939618, the record is clear enough to anchor the timeline: 2023/2024 harvest, public recognition reporting by August 2024, certificate expiration in July 2025 and later commercial publicity in 2025.
As new lots appear, they should be added to the timeline rather than replacing the older evidence.
Over time, the archive itself becomes an origin asset.
What would count as real progress by 2029?
Cambodia does not need hundreds of awards to demonstrate progress.
A more meaningful three-year target would look like this:
Multiple named lots every harvest. Not one hero sample.
At least several farms or producer groups. Enough to separate company performance from regional potential.
Repeated varieties and processes. So year-to-year comparisons are possible.
Standardized sensory records. Description as well as quality impression.
Physical QC attached to sensory data. Because clean cup and physical preparation belong together.
Commercial volumes beside evaluation results. So buyers know what can actually be purchased.
Independent evaluation. Enough external replication to reduce self-reporting bias.
Transparent failures. Because an origin that records what went wrong learns faster than one that only publishes trophies.
If Cambodia can produce that record for three consecutive harvests, the conversation will be fundamentally different.
The country would no longer be asking the world to believe that it has Fine Robusta potential.
It would be showing the dataset.
One sample opened the door; the dataset has to build the origin
Sample 939618 matters.
It gives Cambodia an identifiable quality milestone and a reference point that can be revisited rather than a vague story repeated from one article to another.
But the most valuable use of 80.50 is not to repeat the number forever.
It is to make the next question harder.
Can another lot do it?
Can another farm do it?
Can the same variety do it next year?
Can the same process reproduce the sensory profile?
Can buyers recognize recurring characteristics without seeing the label?
Can the quality survive commercial scale?
Can the origin explain why its strongest coffees work?
When Cambodia can answer those questions with records rather than rhetoric, 80.50 will have served its purpose.
It will no longer be the story.
It will be the first data point in the story of an origin.
