Why Is Authentic Cambodian Robusta Still So Hard to Find in the United States?
Cambodian Robusta remains difficult to buy in the U.S. because the origin is small, domestic demand is strong and importer relationships are still developing.
Search for Vietnamese Robusta in the United States and you will find multiple roasters and importers. Search for Cambodian Robusta and the options become much thinner.
That does not necessarily mean Cambodian coffee is being excluded. It means the commercial pathway is still immature.
Cambodia produces very little coffee
A 2026 Cambodian report estimated domestic production at only around 1,000 tonnes while the country consumes roughly 20,000 tonnes annually.
When the domestic market already absorbs most available supply, exporters have limited surplus to offer overseas.
The origin is still building export infrastructure
International coffee trade requires documentation, logistics, warehousing, quality control, lot preparation and relationships with freight forwarders and importers.
Cambodia is still building those systems.
Robusta has historically faced a perception problem in the U.S.
The American specialty market was built largely around Arabica. Robusta became associated with instant coffee, cheap blends and harsh flavor.
A U.S. importer therefore takes two risks with Cambodian Robusta: a new origin and a coffee species many specialty consumers still misunderstand.
Small lots are expensive to move
International logistics reward volume. A very small experimental shipment can be disproportionately expensive.
For an emerging origin, the solution is often consolidation through specialized importers or shared shipments.
Fine Robusta can change the economics
If the coffee offers a distinctive cup, traceability and a compelling origin story, specialty buyers may accept higher per-kilogram logistics costs.
The U.S. does not need Cambodia to produce enormous volumes. It needs a few reliable exporters and importers capable of creating continuity.
