Cambodia's Coffee Export Industry: Challenges, Opportunities, and the OCC Model
Cambodia's coffee export sector is small, young (in its post-conflict iteration), and positioned at an inflection point. For international buyers, importers, and roasters, understanding this landscape is essential before engaging with Cambodian specialty coffee.

**The State of Cambodia's Coffee Industry**
Cambodia produces roughly 20,000–25,000 metric tons of coffee annually — a small figure relative to regional giants like Vietnam (1.7 million MT) or Indonesia (750,000 MT). The vast majority is Robusta, grown primarily in Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri provinces.
The industry is bifurcated:
* **Commodity tier:** Low-altitude, mass-processed Robusta sold into the regional commodity market, primarily to Vietnamese brokers who blend it into commercial coffee products
* **Specialty tier:** Small but growing, represented by producers like OCC who are specifically targeting international specialty buyers
**Export Challenges**
1. **Infrastructure:** Cold-chain logistics, export documentation, and shipping infrastructure remain underdeveloped relative to established coffee origins
2. **Volume constraints:** The specialty tier is small. Buyers expecting Ethiopian-scale supply should calibrate expectations appropriately
3. **Market recognition:** Cambodia is not yet on the mental map of most specialty coffee buyers — which requires more education and storytelling investment
4. **Certification:** Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and other certification pathways are in process but not fully established across all producers
**Opportunities**
1. **First-mover advantage:** Relationships built with Cambodian producers now will be valuable when the market matures
2. **Story differentiation:** ‘Cambodian single-origin Robusta’ is a story no other roaster in your market has told yet
3. **Price position:** Pre-market-maturity pricing means quality at accessible cost
4. **Direct trade:** The small scale of the specialty sector makes truly direct relationships possible — no intermediary, no broker layer
**The OCC Export Model**
OCC has established export pathways with international buyers, with shipments to select markets in Asia and early conversations with European specialty importers. For buyers interested in sampling, OCC provides green bean samples with full provenance documentation.
