Coffea Canephora in Cambodia: What We Know About Robusta Genetics and Plant Material
A genetics and planting-material guide for Cambodian Robusta that separates species, clone, seed-propagated variety, and local planting claims, with current evidence on Mondulkiri and Vietnam-derived TR material.
Cambodia’s best-documented commercial coffee species is Coffea canephora, commonly called Robusta. In Mondulkiri, recent development programs have combined local nursery work with technical input from Vietnam, particularly the Western Highlands Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute (WASI). Public sources also identify TRS1 as one of the named planting materials now being propagated in the province.
The evidence is useful, but incomplete. Cambodia does not yet have a public, farm-by-farm inventory of Canephora clones and seed-derived populations. For that reason, OCC treats cultivar names as traceability data only when the planting material is documented.
What is Coffea canephora?
Coffea canephora is a coffee species native to tropical Africa. Robusta is the best-known commercial name associated with the species, but Canephora is genetically diverse.
That distinction matters. A plantation can consist entirely of Coffea canephora while containing several clones, seed-derived families, or breeding populations. Those plants may differ in yield, bean size, maturation timing, drought response, disease susceptibility, plant architecture, and sensory potential.
For technical writing, four levels should be kept separate:
- species: Coffea canephora
- commercial group: Robusta or Conilon, where relevant
- planting material: named clone, seed-derived synthetic variety, hybrid population, or locally propagated material
- lot identity: the field or farm block that produced the harvested coffee
Calling all of these simply “Robusta variety” removes information that becomes important in agronomy and quality research.
Why is Canephora important in Mondulkiri?
Local field evidence shows that Canephora is established around Sen Monorom. A 2021 peer-reviewed study examined three Coffea canephora plantations near the city at an average elevation of roughly 700 metres. The study area had a mean annual temperature of 22.9°C and substantial seasonal rainfall.
Cambodian agriculture reporting has also described Robusta as the main coffee type suited to Mondulkiri’s production conditions. This does not mean every site in the province is equally suitable. It does show that current quality development is being built largely around the species already adapted to the region rather than around a wholesale shift to Arabica.
That is relevant to Fine Robusta research because quality improvement can occur within Canephora through genetics, cherry selection, processing, drying, roasting, and sensory evaluation.
What is a coffee clone?
A clone is plant material reproduced vegetatively from a selected parent. The objective is to preserve that parent’s genotype with much less genetic variation than would occur through ordinary seed propagation.
Clonal propagation is widely used in Canephora breeding because the species is highly variable and predominantly cross-pollinating. Vietnam’s Robusta improvement programs have released selected clones including TR4, TR9, TR11, TR12, TR14, and TR15.
A clone name should not be assigned to a Cambodian planting block unless the nursery or farm can document the material. Similar-looking trees are not genetic proof.
What is TRS1?
TRS1 is not a single clone.
Vietnamese breeding literature describes TRS1 as seed-propagated synthetic material produced from an open-pollinated seed garden containing the selected clones TR4, TR9, TR11, and TR12. World Coffee Research classifies TRS1 as polyclonal planting material in the Congo genetic group and identifies WASI as the breeder.
Phan Viet Ha’s 2017 review of Vietnamese Robusta breeding likewise describes TRS1 as a synthetic variety derived from those four parents and notes that it was officially recognized in Vietnam in 2015.
A 2026 peer-reviewed review of twentieth- and twenty-first-century Robusta breeding confirms the same breeding history and identifies TRS1 as seed-propagated material rather than a single clonal line.
This distinction is important for traceability. Seedlings produced from a managed multi-parent seed garden share a breeding design, but they are not genetically identical in the way vegetatively propagated clones are.
Is TRS1 being planted in Cambodia?
Yes, according to KOFI’s own published reporting.
In a sponsored 2025 report, KOFI stated that more than 300,000 TRS1 seedlings had been propagated for approximately 300 hectares in Mondulkiri and that its coffee program worked with more than 400 farmer families. These figures should be treated as company-reported program data, not as independently audited province-wide statistics.
Independent Cambodian reporting provides a second layer of evidence. In 2023, national media described collaboration among the Mondulkiri agriculture department, KOFI, and WASI specialists to distribute improved or climate-resilient coffee planting material. That reporting did not provide a complete cultivar list.
The responsible conclusion is therefore narrow: TRS1 has documented program-level presence in Mondulkiri, while the province’s full cultivar composition remains unknown.
Are TR4, TR9, and other Vietnamese clones planted in Mondulkiri?
They are often mentioned in regional coffee discussions because they are important in Vietnamese breeding, but public Cambodian documentation is not equally strong for every clone name.
The verified sources establish three facts. Vietnam developed and released several TR clones. Cambodia has collaborated with WASI-linked specialists. TRS1 has been explicitly named and quantified in KOFI’s own reporting.
Those facts do not prove that TR4, TR9, TR11, or TR12 are each widely planted as clonal blocks across Mondulkiri.
Until nursery records, farm records, genetic tests, or official variety surveys are available, OCC should describe unverified names as reported planting material rather than established province-wide cultivars.
Why is Vietnam relevant to Cambodian Canephora genetics?
Vietnam has one of the world’s most developed Robusta breeding systems and shares a regional production environment with northeastern Cambodia.
WASI began formal Robusta improvement work decades ago. Published breeding research describes selection for yield, bean size, leaf-rust resistance, maturation timing, adaptation, and other farm traits. The resulting material includes both vegetatively propagated clones and seed-propagated populations such as TRS1.
Regional breeding experience can shorten the learning curve for Cambodia, but material selected in Vietnam still requires local testing. Rainfall distribution, soil, shade, farm management, pest pressure, harvest timing, and processing conditions differ across sites.
A cultivar name is therefore a hypothesis about performance, not proof of performance in Mondulkiri.
Does high yield mean better Fine Robusta?
No.
Yield is an agronomic trait. Fine Robusta quality is evaluated from the physical and sensory quality of the coffee produced.
Breeding programs may select for yield, bean size, disease resistance, drought performance, uniform maturation, plant architecture, or harvest efficiency. Those traits can improve farm productivity without guaranteeing a high cupping score.
The same planting material can also produce different results under different management and post-harvest systems.
A useful Cambodian evaluation program should therefore measure farm performance and cup performance separately, then study how they interact.
Why does cross-pollination matter in Canephora?
Coffea canephora is predominantly outcrossing and depends on genetically compatible pollen sources. This is one reason the species retains substantial genetic diversity.
For orchard design, the practical implication is that planting material cannot be considered only tree by tree. Pollination compatibility, flowering overlap, maturity timing, and field arrangement may all matter.
This is also why a seed-derived synthetic variety should not be confused with a single clone. TRS1 was designed as a multi-parent seed population rather than one vegetatively reproduced genotype.
What does “climate-resistant” coffee mean?
The phrase needs a defined stress.
A plant may be selected for better performance under drought, high temperature, disease pressure, or another specific constraint. That does not make it resistant to every climate risk.
Cambodian media used the phrase “climate-resistant coffee strains” when describing material associated with provincial and WASI collaboration. OCC should not expand that into “climate-proof Robusta.”
Mondulkiri coffee remains exposed to rainfall variability, dry-season water stress, extreme heat, changes in flowering patterns, pests, and disease. Improved genetics may reduce some risks, but local multi-year trials are needed to quantify the effect.
How should planting material be evaluated?
For research and farm management, a useful evaluation should record the nursery source and follow the same material across several harvests.
Relevant variables include survival, vegetative growth, flowering, yield, maturity timing, bean size, pest and disease response, drought performance, compatibility with the farm’s shade system, and final sensory quality.
One productive year is not enough. Coffee is perennial, and genotype-by-environment effects can appear only after several seasons or under stressful weather.
Where possible, a trial should include control material planted under the same conditions.
How should cultivar information be used in coffee research?
As traceability, not as a flavor guarantee.
If a lot is identified as TRS1, the evidence should connect the coffee to a documented nursery source or farm block. A mixed lot from several blocks may not justify one cultivar label.
The same caution applies to sensory claims. Statements such as “TRS1 is sweeter” or “TR9 has more body” require controlled comparisons. They should not be inferred from breeding names alone.
Genetics influences potential. Harvest maturity, fermentation, drying, storage, roasting, and brewing still shape the cup.
Does Cambodia have a formal Canephora breeding program?
Public evidence currently points more strongly to adaptation trials, nursery development, demonstration farms, farmer training, and collaboration with regional breeding specialists than to a mature national breeding program releasing a catalogue of Cambodian Canephora varieties.
That distinction matters. Importing or propagating improved planting material is different from running a breeding program with controlled crosses, multi-location trials, genetic evaluation, and formal variety release.
Cambodia may build more of that capacity over time. At present, the documented evidence should be described at the level it supports.
What research is still missing?
The largest gap is a public map of what is actually planted.
Useful future work would include farm-level cultivar surveys, nursery traceability, genetic fingerprinting, multi-year yield trials, drought and disease assessment, flowering and maturity records, and standardized cup-quality comparisons.
Genotype-by-shade and genotype-by-processing experiments would also be valuable. They could show whether the same planting material responds differently under local agroforestry or post-harvest conditions.
Without this dataset, Cambodia can name some planting programs but cannot yet describe the full genetic structure of its coffee sector.

The evidence does not yet support a complete inventory of named clones across Mondulkiri. The strongest next step is field-level documentation that links planting material, agronomic performance, and cup results to the same traceable lots.
