How Fine Robusta Quality Standards Influence Pricing Without Setting the Price
16. CQI Standards and Their Influence on Coffee Pricing Introduction Quality scores don't just describe coffee — they directly shape how much it sells for, often in very measurable ways. Why This Matters...
Quality standards can influence coffee pricing by making differences easier to document, but they do not set a universal market price.
In 2026, OCC should also distinguish historical CQI Fine Robusta material from the current SCA Q Grader/CVA system.
Standards improve comparability
A buyer can compare physical quality, sensory characteristics, process and lot evidence more effectively when both offers use clearly defined methods.
That can support a price discussion because the buyer has more information about what is being purchased.
Price is still negotiated
The final price can depend on:
- cup profile and application fit;
- defect level and physical consistency;
- origin and traceability;
- processing;
- lot size and repeatability;
- availability;
- freight and delivery terms;
- market conditions;
- buyer strategy.
A score alone does not establish the commercial value.
Historical CQI thresholds
Historical CQI Fine Robusta/Q Robusta frameworks used defined quality thresholds. Those thresholds are useful for interpreting older records, but OCC should not convert them into an automatic premium schedule.
Current Q framework
SCA has operated the Q Grader Program since October 1, 2025 using Coffee Value Assessment (CVA). The current Q Grader license is not species-specific.
For 2026 buyer decisions, current lot evidence matters more than the institutional label attached to an old score.
What a price-premium article should prove
If OCC states that a specific lot or origin received a premium, the article should identify the transaction or dataset behind the claim. Generic statements such as “Fine Robusta certification always commands a significant premium” should be avoided.
OCC routing
This page supports the formal Fine Robusta price-premium Owner. Commercial supply questions route to Wholesale.
