How Historical CQI Standards Shaped Coffee Trade — and What Changed in 2025
7. CQI Standards and Their Role in Global Coffee Trade Introduction Beyond individual transactions, CQI-originated standards play a structural role in how coffee moves through global trade as a whole. Why This...
Standardized quality language helps buyers and sellers communicate across borders. CQI played an important historical role in building that language through the Q system and Fine Robusta work. In 2026, however, OCC should separate that history from the current institutional structure.
CQI's historical contribution
CQI helped normalize professional coffee evaluation, shared scoring language and formal quality education. For Canephora, its work with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority helped establish Fine Robusta as a category that could be evaluated rather than dismissed as undifferentiated commodity Robusta.
That history still matters when interpreting older contracts, reports and quality records.
What changed on October 1, 2025
Operation of the Q Grader Program transferred from CQI to the Specialty Coffee Association. The current Q Grader program is based on Coffee Value Assessment (CVA).
CQI stopped accepting new coffee samples for grading after September 30, 2025. New 2026 trade documentation therefore should not imply that CQI is still operating the former Q grading workflow.
What quality documentation does in trade
A useful specification can reduce ambiguity by identifying the lot, sample stage, physical requirements, sensory evidence and acceptance criteria.
It can support:
- supplier comparison;
- sample approval;
- price negotiation;
- repeat-purchase consistency;
- claims verification;
- contract specifications.
That function does not depend on calling the coffee “CQI certified.”
Historical records still have value
A pre-transition CQI/Q Robusta record can remain relevant evidence. The buyer should preserve the date, protocol, evaluator and sample identity.
Historical evidence should not be used as a perpetual guarantee for new harvests.
Current buyer practice
In 2026, buyers should combine standardized physical and sensory evidence with traceability, sample-to-shipment continuity and commercial terms. For Fine Robusta, Canephora-specific experience remains useful even though the current Q license itself is not species-specific.
OCC routing
This article is supporting institutional history. Broad grading and standards queries should route to OCC’s registered grading and standards Owners; procurement queries continue to supplier evaluation and Wholesale.
