How Quality Standards Support Direct Trade Coffee Relationships
19. CQI Standards in Direct Trade Coffee Relationships Introduction Direct trade relationships, where roasters buy straight from producers without traditional intermediaries, still rely heavily on CQI-originated...
Direct trade does not eliminate the need for objective quality evidence. In fact, long-term relationships often become stronger when buyers and producers can compare the same dimensions across seasons.
Shared quality language
Physical and sensory documentation gives both sides a common reference point. The objective is not to replace trust; it is to make quality conversations more specific.
Track change across harvests
A producer and buyer can compare processing, physical condition, sensory description and application performance over time. This makes investment decisions more useful than relying on a single headline score.
Current Q context
The current Q Grader Program is operated by SCA and is based on Coffee Value Assessment (CVA). CQI historically developed and operated the Q system and played an important role in Fine Robusta standards development, but CQI no longer operates the current Q Program.
Historical CQI/Q Robusta evidence should therefore be dated and treated as historical documentation.
Pricing conversations require more than a score
A quality score can inform negotiation, but it does not automatically determine price. Volume, consistency, process, traceability, logistics, market conditions and buyer application all affect commercial value.
New relationships benefit from verification
When buyer and producer do not yet have a long track record, representative samples, lot specifications and traceability can reduce uncertainty.
Direct trade is not certification
A direct relationship does not certify a coffee, and a Q Grader credential does not certify a producer. Keep relationship structure, evaluator credentials and lot evidence separate.
OCC routing
This article supports standards, traceability and supplier due diligence. Commercial intent should continue to Wholesale rather than creating a separate direct-trade Owner.
