CQI's Producer-Development Role: What Impact Can Be Documented?

CQI has a long history of producer-facing coffee quality work, but OCC should distinguish documented program activity from broad claims that an organization directly “improves farmer livelihoods.”

CQI's current role after 2025

The Q Grader Program transferred to SCA on October 1, 2025. CQI's continuing relevance is more closely tied to producer development and post-harvest processing education than to operating the current Q credential.

What can be documented directly

A program can document activities such as:

• producer or technician training;
• fermentation and drying education;
• sorting and post-harvest practices;
• number and location of participants when reliable data exist;
• technical assistance delivered;
• changes measured within a defined project.

Those are stronger claims than broad statements about income or development without a measurement framework.

What requires additional evidence

Claims about higher farmer income, market access, poverty reduction or long-term livelihood improvement require economic and longitudinal evidence.

A quality-training program may contribute to those outcomes, but contribution is not the same as demonstrated causation.

Fine Robusta context

CQI's historical Fine Robusta work helped make differentiated Canephora quality more visible. That can be discussed as category and standards history.

For current professional Q evaluation, OCC should reference SCA/CVA rather than imply that CQI still operates Q grading.

How OCC should discuss impact

Use project-specific evidence and state what was measured. If only training or technical assistance is documented, say exactly that.

Avoid converting quality education into an automatic claim of higher income or market success.
