How Coffee Exporters Use Quality Documentation in International Trade
14. How Coffee Exporters Leverage CQI Certification for Trade Introduction For exporters, CQI-originated certification isn't just documentation — it's a genuine competitive tool in international trade. Why This...
Exporters use quality documentation to make an offer easier to verify. In 2026, this should not be described as simply “leveraging CQI certification.” CQI no longer operates the Q Grader Program; SCA now operates Q Grader education using Coffee Value Assessment (CVA).
Differentiate a lot with evidence
A serious export offer can identify the origin, producer or processor, harvest, process, lot, physical condition, sensory evidence, quantity, packaging and lead time.
That is more useful than attaching a generic quality label.
Accelerate buyer screening
Documentation helps buyers decide which offers deserve samples and deeper evaluation. It cannot replace the sample itself, but it can make the first stage of procurement more efficient.
Support specification discussions
A buyer and exporter can use physical and sensory evidence to define what the delivered coffee should match. Contract language should name the method and acceptance criteria rather than rely on a vague “certified” claim.
Build a track record
Repeated, comparable documentation across shipments can create trust more effectively than one high-scoring sample. Buyers want to know whether the supplier can reproduce acceptable quality and preserve sample-to-shipment continuity.
Historical CQI records
Older CQI/Q Robusta documentation can still support a historical lot when properly dated. CQI stopped accepting new grading samples after September 30, 2025, so exporters should not present a new 2026 lot as entering the old CQI Q workflow.
Current Q context
The current SCA Q Grader license is CVA-based and not species-specific. Fine Robusta exporters should therefore verify both the evaluator's current credential and relevant Canephora experience.
Origin Coffee Cambodia (OCC.) routing
Exporter and sourcing intent should route to Cambodia supplier evaluation and then Wholesale. Grading education remains secondary support.
