What Makes Mondulkiri Suitable for Robusta Coffee? Soil, Climate, and Farm Management
A research-led explanation of why Coffea canephora can perform in Mondulkiri, separating documented climate and soil conditions from farm management, shade, water, planting material, and post-harvest quality.
Mondulkiri is suitable for Coffea canephora because several documented conditions around Sen Monorom fall within a workable range for Robusta: the studied farms averaged about 700 meters above sea level, annual mean temperature was 22.9°C, and long-term mean annual rainfall was about 2,203 mm. The same 2021 field study found clayey latosol soils and higher soil moisture under shade. None of those factors guarantees Fine Robusta quality. They describe an environment in which Canephora can grow; quality still depends on genetics, harvest maturity, farm management, processing, drying, storage, and roasting.
That distinction is central to understanding Mondulkiri. The province has agronomic potential, but "terroir" should not be used as a shortcut for cup quality.
What evidence do we have about Mondulkiri coffee-growing conditions?
The strongest published local evidence comes from a 2021 Sustainability paper by Ehrenbergerová and colleagues. The team studied three Coffea canephora plantations around Sen Monorom Municipality, with farms of roughly 3, 6, and 9 hectares.
Across those sites, the reported average elevation was about 700 meters. Sen Monorom's annual mean temperature was 22.9°C and mean annual rainfall was 2,203 mm. During the researchers' measurement year, rainfall reached 2,427 mm across 143 days with at least 1 mm of precipitation. The minimum recorded temperature was 15°C and the maximum was 36°C.
The dominant soil in the research areas was described as latosol with clayey texture throughout the profile.
These are real field measurements and site descriptions. They are much stronger evidence than generic statements such as "Mondulkiri has perfect volcanic soil" or "high altitude creates premium coffee."
They are also limited to three plantations. OCC should not turn those values into province-wide constants.
Is 22.9°C a good temperature for Robusta?
It sits within commonly cited suitable annual ranges for Coffea canephora.
The 2021 Mondulkiri paper cites an approximate optimum annual mean range around 22–26°C for Robusta. A 2025 review of coffee ecophysiology likewise emphasizes that Canephora generally tolerates warmer growing environments than Arabica, while still being vulnerable to excessive heat and drought.
The important word is "mean."
A mean of 22.9°C does not mean the plants experience 22.9°C every day. The Mondulkiri study recorded temperatures from 15°C to 36°C. Plant response depends on duration, water availability, humidity, radiation, wind, shade, and developmental stage.
This is why climate suitability should be described as a range of interacting conditions rather than one annual number.
Does Mondulkiri's elevation make Robusta better?
Elevation changes the environment, but it does not automatically create better coffee.
At about 700 meters on the studied farms, temperature is cooler than in many lowland parts of Cambodia. Cooler conditions can affect growth rate, respiration, water demand, flowering, and fruit development.
Robusta can grow across a broad altitude range internationally. The 2021 study notes that Canephora can be cultivated from sea level to well above 1,000 meters depending on climate.
For buyers and researchers, farm elevation is useful context. It is not a sensory score.
A high-elevation lot can still be poorly harvested, badly fermented, unevenly dried, or over-roasted. A lower farm can still produce clean Fine Robusta if the full production system is controlled.
OCC should therefore avoid sentences such as "700 meters gives Mondulkiri coffee more sweetness" unless a local study actually connects elevation with measured sensory outcomes.
What role does rainfall play?
Rainfall supports tree growth, but timing matters as much as annual total.
The Sen Monorom research area receives a pronounced wet season and dry season. Growers reported flowering around March near the end of the dry season and harvest beginning around November at the start of the next dry period.
Coffee flowering physiology helps explain why that pattern matters. A moderate dry period can condition dormant flower buds. Rain or renewed water availability can then trigger flowering. If rainfall becomes irregular, flowering may become less synchronized, which can later create fruit at different maturity stages on the same tree.
Heavy rain also creates farm-management risks. Soil saturation, erosion, disease pressure, difficult field access, and slow drying can all become problems even when annual rainfall looks favorable.
The correct conclusion is not "Mondulkiri gets lots of rain, therefore it is ideal for coffee." The useful conclusion is that rainfall is sufficient for Canephora, but water timing and drainage have to be managed.
Does the dry season help coffee production?
Yes, but dry-season stress can be both useful and dangerous.
A dry period helps structure the reproductive cycle of coffee and can support flowering synchronization when followed by rainfall. A drier harvest period can also make field access and drying easier.
Too much drought is different. The 2021 Mondulkiri study found periods when soil moisture in sunny plots fell below the threshold the researchers used to indicate water deficit. A 2025 ecophysiology review identifies drought and supra-optimal heat as major climate stresses for both Arabica and Canephora.
That means the same seasonal dryness that helps organize flowering can become damaging if it is too long or too intense.
Farm design, shade, soil organic matter, root health, mulching, and water management can determine whether a dry season is manageable or stressful.
What do we know about Mondulkiri soils?
On the three published study farms, the dominant soil was latosol with a clayey texture.
Clayey soil can hold substantial water, but infiltration, drainage, compaction, organic matter, slope, and rooting depth determine whether that water is actually useful to coffee roots.
OCC should be careful with the popular phrase "red soil." Color alone is not enough to describe fertility or coffee potential. A soil needs analysis for pH, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, macro- and micronutrients, texture, drainage, and physical structure.
The 2021 study provides a real soil classification for its sites. It does not provide a complete soil map of all Mondulkiri coffee land.
For authority content, that limitation is valuable. It tells readers exactly what is known and what remains to be measured.
Does shade help Robusta in Mondulkiri?
The best local evidence suggests shade can improve soil moisture without necessarily reducing yield under the conditions studied.
Ehrenbergerová and colleagues compared shaded and sunny sections on the three plantations. They did not find significant differences in bean size, bean weight, fruit weight, ripeness, or total fruit yield per shrub between the shaded and sunny areas. Soil moisture, however, was generally higher in the shaded plots.
That is an important result because farmers sometimes assume shade automatically lowers production.
The study does not prove that any amount of shade is beneficial. The actual shade levels, tree species, root competition, pruning, spacing, and farm conditions matter. The authors themselves note that more work is needed to identify the most suitable level of shade for Robusta.
For Mondulkiri, the evidence supports treating agroforestry as a serious production system rather than a purely environmental add-on.
Which shade trees were documented?
The study farms used several fruit and multipurpose trees.
Documented shade species included lychee, durian, avocado, banana, cassia, and other trees depending on the plantation. Average shade in the studied plots was roughly in the low-to-mid 40 percent range, though individual measured areas varied substantially.
This matters because "shade" is not one treatment. A tall sparse durian canopy behaves differently from dense banana cover. Tree roots can compete with coffee roots or help stabilize soil moisture depending on species and spacing.
A practical farm plan therefore asks which tree, how many, how large, how pruned, and where planted.
The answer cannot be reduced to "30 percent shade is best" without local trials.
Does agroforestry improve quality?
Not automatically.
Shade can alter temperature, humidity, soil moisture, light exposure, and potentially maturation. Those effects may change coffee development. But quality must still be measured in the harvested and processed coffee.
The 2021 Mondulkiri study did not report a Fine Robusta sensory comparison between shaded and sunny lots. It measured yield, bean traits, ripeness, trunk change, and soil moisture.
OCC should therefore not claim that the study proved shaded Mondulkiri Robusta tastes better.
What it did show is that shade did not create the expected yield penalty in those farms and that soil moisture was generally higher under shade. Those agronomic findings can justify further sensory research.
That is a much stronger statement than inventing a flavor benefit that was never measured.
What role does planting material play?
A major one.
Coffea canephora is genetically diverse. Different clones and seed-derived populations can differ in yield, maturation timing, disease response, drought tolerance, bean size, and cup potential.
Cambodian development programs have worked with Vietnam-linked planting material and TRS1 seedlings in Mondulkiri. The presence of improved material can raise agronomic potential, but a named variety does not guarantee a Fine Robusta cup.
A planting program should evaluate both field performance and sensory performance over several harvests.
This is particularly important in a new origin. If Cambodia expands acreage rapidly without documenting which material performs well under local conditions, the country may gain production volume without building a clear quality identity.
How important is farm spacing?
Spacing affects competition, canopy development, airflow, access, and yield per hectare.
The three plantations in the 2021 study used 3 × 3 meter spacing for coffee shrubs. That gives a useful local reference, but it should not be treated as the optimal Cambodia standard.
Different planting material, pruning systems, shade arrangements, mechanization, and soil fertility can justify different densities.
High density can increase early yield per hectare but may intensify competition and disease risk if the canopy closes. Wide spacing can simplify access but reduce plant population.
A serious agronomic recommendation needs multi-year local data rather than copying one study's layout.
Why does farm management matter as much as climate?
Because climate sets the boundary conditions, while management determines how the crop operates inside them.
A farmer cannot change Mondulkiri's annual rainfall, but can influence shade, drainage, pruning, nutrition, ground cover, weed competition, harvest selection, and soil organic matter.
A farm with suitable rainfall and temperature can still perform poorly if trees are nutritionally stressed or badly pruned.
Conversely, good management can buffer some environmental stress. Shade may reduce radiation load. Organic matter may improve water retention. Ground cover may reduce erosion. Pruning can improve airflow and crop structure.
This is why "terroir" should not be used to erase management. The farm is not a passive landscape.
How does harvest maturity fit into growing conditions?
It is the bridge between agronomy and processing.
A healthy tree can still produce low-quality coffee if cherries are picked too early. A stressed tree may also ripen unevenly, making selective harvest more difficult.
Recent Mondulkiri training programs have focused on proper harvesting for exactly this reason. Provincial and partner organizations have been teaching farmers how harvesting technique affects losses and quality.
The environment gives the tree the opportunity to develop fruit. Harvest decides which fruit enters the processing system.
For Fine Robusta, that handoff is critical.
How much coffee is Mondulkiri producing now?
Public figures show a small but expanding sector, and the numbers vary by year and reporting scope.
In 2023, provincial authorities reported about 525 hectares cultivated by approximately 365 households and one company. In August 2024, the provincial agriculture department said more than 500 hectares were under coffee and 346 hectares were then being harvested at an average yield of 2.096 tonnes per hectare.
By 2026, national reporting cited 705 hectares of coffee across Cambodia, with 563 hectares under harvest and 1,333 tonnes of production. These newer figures are national rather than Mondulkiri-only.
OCC should not combine these into a single trend line without checking definitions. Planted area, harvested area, fresh cherry, dried coffee, and green coffee are not interchangeable measures.
The authority signal comes from preserving those distinctions.
Is Mondulkiri naturally a Fine Robusta origin?
No origin is "naturally Fine Robusta" simply because its climate is suitable.
Coffee Quality Institute evaluation is based on actual coffee quality, not geography. Fine Robusta requires clean green coffee and sensory performance that meet defined standards.
Mondulkiri's environmental conditions make quality production possible. Recent recognition of Cambodian Robusta as Fine Robusta shows that the quality potential can be realized.
But the rating belongs to evaluated coffee, not automatically to every bean grown in the province.
That is an important editorial rule for OCC: origin can support quality claims, but it cannot replace lot-level evidence.
What research is still missing in Mondulkiri?
Quite a lot, which is normal for an emerging origin.
Cambodia would benefit from multi-year trials on genotype performance, flowering and harvest phenology, soil fertility, shade percentage, shade-tree species, irrigation or drought response, disease pressure, cherry maturity, yield stability, and standardized cup quality.
The 2021 Sen Monorom study is valuable because it provides real field data. It should become the beginning of a local evidence base, not the final word.
Future work could pair farm sensors with lot-level cupping. That would allow researchers to test whether soil moisture, canopy temperature, rainfall timing, or shade actually correlate with measurable sensory differences.
Until then, OCC should resist turning plausible agronomic mechanisms into proven flavor claims.

Limits of the Mondulkiri evidence
We can say with reasonable confidence that Coffea canephora is agronomically compatible with the documented Sen Monorom environment. We have peer-reviewed local measurements of temperature, rainfall, elevation, soil type, shade, soil moisture, and yield.
We cannot say that all Mondulkiri farms have identical soil, elevation, or microclimate. We also cannot say that one environmental variable causes a specific flavor note because the main local field study did not conduct that sensory comparison.
Global Canephora research helps explain drought, temperature, genotype, shade, and flowering mechanisms. It should be used to interpret Cambodia, not overwrite it.
That distinction is what turns an origin article into research-based coffee information.
What the local evidence supports
Mondulkiri is a credible Robusta-growing environment because the climate and field conditions documented around Sen Monorom fall within a workable Canephora range. The province also has an expanding farmer base, improved planting programs, harvest training, and processing investment.
The environment is only the first layer.
Fine Robusta emerges when genetics, farm management, cherry maturity, processing, drying, storage, and sensory evaluation all work together. Mondulkiri has the raw conditions. The quality system decides what those conditions become.
