Cambodia can replace part of its imported coffee demand, but total import substitution is neither necessary nor immediately realistic.

The strongest opportunity is in segments where local identity creates value: Cambodian cafés, hospitality, tourism, specialty roasting, premium retail, and traceable Fine Robusta.

To win those buyers, local coffee must offer more than patriotism. It needs stable quality, representative samples, repeatable processing, professional roasting, clear lot data, and reliable supply.

Imported coffee will continue to serve profiles and volumes that domestic production cannot yet match. A healthy market can use both.

Buyer takeaway: the strategic goal should be value substitution rather than volume substitution. Every kilogram of Cambodian coffee that replaces an import should do so because it meets the buyer’s specification and offers a credible origin advantage.
