1. What Is the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) and Why It Matters
Introduction
The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) is a nonprofit organization that has spent three decades working to raise coffee quality standards and improve the livelihoods of the farmers who grow it. For anyone buying, roasting, or trading coffee, understanding what CQI does — and what it no longer does — is essential context in 2026.
Why This Matters
Coffee quality claims are only as good as the standards behind them. If you're sourcing green coffee, negotiating contracts, or building a private label brand, knowing which organization actually sets and verifies quality benchmarks helps you avoid outdated assumptions and ask suppliers the right questions.
Main Explanation
CQI was founded in 1996 to solve a structural problem in the coffee trade: buyers evaluated coffee in cupping labs based on roasted, brewed samples, while sellers were paid based on green bean appearance in mills and warehouses — two very different pictures of the same coffee. CQI's answer was to build a shared, sensory-based language of quality that could travel the length of the supply chain.
For over twenty years, that language was best known through the Q Grader Program, which CQI launched in 2004. As of October 1, 2025, however, operational control of the Q Grader program transferred to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), which now runs an "Evolved Q Grader" credential built on its Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) framework. CQI is no longer involved in day-to-day Q Grader operations, though it originated the program and shaped its first two decades.
Today, heading into its 30th anniversary in 2026, CQI's work centers on post-harvest processing (PHP) training, capacity-building projects in more than 50 coffee-producing countries, and the Fine Robusta Standards and Protocols it originally developed with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority.
Comparison Table
| Era | What CQI Did |
|---|---|
| 1996 | Founded as a nonprofit focused on coffee quality and producer livelihoods |
| 2004 | Launched the Q Coffee System and Q Arabica Grader Program |
| 2010–2019 | Developed Q Robusta / R-Grader training and the Fine Robusta Standards and Protocols with UCDA |
| Oct 2025 | Transferred Q Grader operations to SCA's CVA-based "Evolved Q" program |
| 2026 | Focuses on post-harvest processing training and producer-country capacity building |
Real Examples
CQI's early insight — that buyers and sellers needed a common quality vocabulary — is why the Q Grader exam still uses standardized cupping forms today, even under new SCA management. Its partnership with Uganda's coffee authority in the 2010s is also why Fine Robusta grading exists at all as a distinct category from commodity Robusta.
Faq
Is CQI still active in 2026?
Yes. CQI continues to operate as a nonprofit, now focused on post-harvest processing training and producer support rather than running the Q Grader exam.
Does CQI still certify Q Graders?
No. Since October 1, 2025, the SCA administers Q Grader certification through its Evolved Q / CVA framework.
What is CQI best known for historically?
The Q Coffee System, which it introduced in 2004 to create a shared quality language across the coffee supply chain.
Is CQI a for-profit company?
No, CQI is a nonprofit organization.
Does CQI still matter to coffee buyers?
Yes — its Fine Robusta Standard and post-harvest processing expertise remain widely referenced industry benchmarks.
Conclusion
CQI's role has evolved, but its underlying mission — a shared, trustworthy language of coffee quality — still shapes how the industry buys and sells coffee today.

What to verify before acting
- The exact product, origin, lot, process, roast, or supplier being discussed.
- The source, date, and method behind quality, market, or sustainability claims.
- Whether the evidence describes a sample, a shipment, or a general company capability.
- The next practical step: compare a sample, request a specification, confirm documents, or discuss wholesale supply.
Do not create a second owner page for this query. Continue to the Fine Robusta owner for the primary topic and Wholesale Coffee Supply when the reader has a sourcing or commercial question. This keeps the page useful for search while concentrating authority, enquiries, and internal-link signals on the Origin Coffee Cambodia (OCC.) owner architecture.
