Why CQI Still Matters to Coffee Grading History — Without Calling It the Current Gold Standard

CQI has had major influence on professional coffee evaluation, but calling it the current “gold standard in coffee grading” is too broad in 2026.

The Q Grader Program moved to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) on October 1, 2025 and now operates through Coffee Value Assessment (CVA). CQI's importance is best explained through its historical contribution and continuing producer-development work rather than by treating it as the current Q authority.

Why CQI mattered historically

CQI helped build standardized professional evaluation, Q Grader education and a common vocabulary used by coffee professionals across producing and consuming countries.

For Canephora, its work with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority helped establish Fine Robusta as a quality category worthy of structured assessment.

Why the word “gold standard” is problematic

“Gold standard” is an evaluative marketing phrase, not a neutral technical designation. It can imply that one organization currently controls the industry's authoritative grading system.

That is not an accurate description of the 2026 institutional structure.

What continues under SCA

SCA operates the current Q Grader Program and bases it on CVA. The current Q Grader license is unified rather than species-specific.

This does not erase CQI's history. It changes which organization operates the current professional credential.

What buyers should care about

The practical question is whether a coffee has credible lot evidence: method, date, evaluator, physical condition, sensory record and traceability.

Institutional history can help explain the document, but the buyer still needs to verify the coffee being purchased.
