Who Sets Coffee Quality Benchmarks in 2026? SCA, CQI History and Buyer Practice
18. Who Sets Coffee Industry Benchmarks Using CQI Standards? Introduction Industry benchmarks don't emerge from nowhere — specific stakeholders actively use CQI-originated standards to define what "good" coffee...
Coffee quality benchmarks come from standards organizations, professional practice and commercial specifications. No single organization permanently owns every definition of quality.
SCA's current role
SCA operates the Q Grader Program from October 1, 2025 and bases the current course on Coffee Value Assessment (CVA). SCA therefore has a central role in current professional quality-assessment education.
CQI's historical role
CQI built and operated the Q system for roughly two decades and played an important role in Fine Robusta development with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority.
That history remains relevant to older Q Robusta and Fine Robusta documents. It does not mean CQI still operates the current Q Grader Program.
Buyers also set commercial benchmarks
A buyer may require defect limits, moisture targets, sample approval, flavor characteristics, roast performance or other contract specifications. Those commercial requirements can be stricter or simply different from an educational grading framework.
Evaluators apply the framework
Professional evaluators help make standards usable by applying consistent methods. The current SCA Q Grader license is not species-specific, so Canephora experience should be verified separately when the product is Fine Robusta.
Standards evolve
The correct 2026 approach is versioned evidence: state the date, method and standard being used. Avoid describing a historical protocol as timeless or universal.
