Who Uses Fine Robusta Quality Standards in 2026?
1. Who Uses CQI Standards and Why It Matters Introduction CQI-originated standards touch nearly every stakeholder in the coffee supply chain — here's a broad overview of who relies on them and why. Why This Matters...
Fine Robusta quality language is used by producers, processors, evaluators, exporters, importers and roasters. But the institutional context matters: historical CQI Fine Robusta and Q Robusta work should not be confused with the current SCA-operated Q Grader Program.
Producers and processors
Producers use quality standards as targets for harvest, processing, drying and sorting. The most useful standards are those that can be translated into measurable farm and processing controls.
Evaluators
Professional evaluators use defined methods to assess physical condition and sensory characteristics. In 2026, SCA operates the Q Grader Program using Coffee Value Assessment (CVA). The current Q Grader license is not species-specific.
Historical Q Robusta/R-Grader credentials remain relevant when reading older records.
Exporters and importers
Trade participants use documentation to compare lots, define specifications and reduce information gaps. They should identify the method and date behind any score rather than relying on generic “certified” wording.
Roasters
Roasters use quality evidence to decide whether a coffee fits espresso, milk beverages, filter, blends or another product. Application testing remains separate from a grading result.
Educators
Educators may teach the history of CQI Fine Robusta alongside current SCA/CVA evaluation. This is useful when the distinction between legacy and current systems is explicit.
What not to assume
Using a historical Fine Robusta framework does not mean a current coffee is “CQI certified.” A Q Grader credential belongs to a person, and a lot evaluation belongs to a defined sample. Neither permanently certifies an origin or future crop.
