Why Coffee Importers Trust Standardized Quality Documentation
4. Why Coffee Importers Trust CQI Certification Introduction Importers face a specific challenge: evaluating coffee quality without direct access to the farm or processing facility — CQI-originated certification...
Importers often evaluate coffee before they can visit the producer or inspect the full shipment. Standardized documentation helps reduce that information gap, but trust should attach to verifiable evidence rather than to an outdated institutional label.
A current 2026 distinction
CQI historically operated the Q Program. From October 1, 2025, SCA operates the Q Grader Program using Coffee Value Assessment (CVA). CQI stopped accepting new grading samples after September 30, 2025.
Therefore a current buyer should distinguish historical CQI documentation from current SCA/CVA evaluation.
What importers actually need
Useful evidence can include:
- origin and lot identity;
- producer or processor information;
- harvest and process;
- physical grading data;
- moisture and other relevant measurements;
- sensory evaluation;
- evaluator and date;
- representative sample;
- shipment specification.
Standardization reduces ambiguity
When a method is named and applied consistently, buyers can compare offers more efficiently and identify meaningful differences between lots.
Documentation supports, but does not replace, independent verification
Importers frequently re-cup or independently evaluate samples, especially with new suppliers or larger purchases. A supplier report is the start of due diligence, not the end.
Historical records require context
A historical Q Robusta or R-Grader report can be legitimate evidence for an older sample. The importer should preserve its date, protocol and evaluator rather than presenting it as a current 2026 SCA credential.
Contract relevance
Quality specifications can support commercial agreements, but the contract should define what is measured, which sample controls and how a mismatch is handled.
OCC routing
Importer due diligence should route to the Cambodia supplier evaluation Owner and Wholesale; grading and standards pages provide supporting verification.
