For decades, the specialty coffee industry has operated under what might be called the single-species assumption—the belief that only Coffea arabica is capable of producing coffee worthy of the "specialty" designation. This assumption has shaped everything from procurement strategies to consumer expectations, creating a binary worldview: arabica for quality, robusta for volume.
The 2010 turning point. That paradigm began to shift in 2010, when the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), in partnership with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), introduced the Fine Robusta Standards. The first Q Robusta course—specialising in Fine Robusta evaluation and grading—was held in Uganda that same year. CQI officially published the Fine Robusta Standards and Protocols in 2019.
The 80+ dual-quality standard. Under CQI's framework, a coffee must score 80 points or above on a 100-point sensory scale to be classified as Fine Robusta. OCC maintains two independent quality libraries—one for arabica, one for robusta—each curated to the same 80+ standard.
The 70/30 blind test. In internal blind cupping sessions, OCC has consistently observed that 70% of participants cannot reliably distinguish between high-scoring Fine Robusta (80+ points) and specialty arabica when both are prepared to optimal roast profiles. The remaining 30% who can identify the species often cite differences in body and crema—not quality—as their differentiator. This finding points toward a species-agnostic future where cup score, not botanical classification, determines value.

Arabica vs Espresso Beans: Are They the Same?
What does "espresso beans" actually mean?
The term "espresso beans" is one of the most misunderstood labels in coffee. It does not describe a species, a variety, or even a specific origin. Instead, it describes three things:
Espresso beans are typically roasted medium-dark to dark (Agtron scale 25–55). This roast level:
Develops caramelized sugars and chocolate/roasty notes
Reduces perceived acidity (important for espresso's concentrated nature)
Creates more soluble compounds that extract quickly under pressure

Many espresso blends combine beans from multiple origins and species to achieve a balanced flavor profile. A classic Italian espresso blend might include:
Brazilian Arabica (nutty, chocolate, body)
Central American Arabica (brightness, acidity)
Robusta (crema, intensity, body)
- Intended Brewing Method
Espresso beans are roasted and blended specifically to perform well in an espresso machine:
High pressure (9 bars)
Short extraction time (20–30 seconds)
Low brew ratio (1:1.5 – 1:2.5)
Can I use espresso beans for filter coffee? Yes—but you may not enjoy it. Espresso beans are roasted darker, which mutes the delicate floral and fruity notes that filter coffee drinkers love. You will get a chocolatey, full-bodied cup, but you will lose the brightness and complexity that make specialty filter coffee special. Conversely, you can use filter-roasted beans for espresso—but the shot will be bright, acidic, and harder to extract properly.
How does espresso roasting differ from filter roasting?
The roast profile is the primary distinction between "espresso beans" and "filter beans." Here is the breakdown:

The science of espresso roasting:
Longer roast times degrade chlorogenic acids → less bitterness.
Higher temperatures trigger Maillard reactions → more chocolate, nut, and toast notes.
More CO₂ is trapped inside the bean → better crema formation during extraction.
Why are espresso beans roasted darker? For solubility and balance. Espresso extracts coffee in just 20–30 seconds. Darker roasting makes the bean more soluble (easier to extract), so you get a balanced shot without under-extraction (sour) or over-extraction (bitter). Lighter roasts are harder to extract in such a short time—often resulting in sour, thin espresso.
Why is Robusta used in espresso blends?
Traditional Italian espresso blends have included Robusta for over a century—and not just to cut costs. Robusta brings three unique advantages to espresso that Arabica alone cannot provide:
- Crema Volume & Stability
Robusta contains higher levels of proteins, polysaccharides, and chlorogenic acids—all of which contribute to crema formation.
Robusta crema is thicker, more persistent, and hazelnut-colored.
Arabica crema is thinner, lighter, and dissipates faster.
This is why traditional Italian espresso has that iconic thick, creamy, long-lasting crema—it comes from Robusta.
- Heavy Body & Intensity
Robusta's higher pyrazine content (responsible for nutty/roasty aromas) and lower acidity create a bold, punchy cup that stands up to milk and sugar.
In a cappuccino or latte, Robusta's body cuts through the milk—Arabica alone can taste thin or watery.
This is why many Italian cafes still use 10–40% Robusta in their house blends.
- Lower Cost—But Not Just for Savings
Yes, Robusta is cheaper than Arabica. But Italian roasters do not use Robusta only for cost-cutting—they use it for engineering the cup. A 100% Arabica espresso can taste thin, too acidic, and lacking in crema for traditional Italian palates.
The most famous Robusta-inclusive espresso blends:
illy Classico: Contains a small percentage of Robusta for crema and body.
Lavazza Super Crema: Contains Robusta specifically for crema volume.
Kimbo Espresso Napoletano: High Robusta content for Neapolitan-style intensity.
Does espresso always contain Robusta? No—not anymore. The Third Wave coffee movement popularized 100% Arabica espresso—often single-origin or light-roasted. These espressos are bright, fruity, and acidic, but they sacrifice the traditional thick crema and heavy body that Robusta provides. There is no "right" answer—it depends on your flavor preference.
Can Arabica be used for espresso?
Absolutely—in fact, most specialty espresso is 100% Arabica. However, the approach is different:

Does "espresso blend" mean lower quality?
No—this is a myth. A well-crafted espresso blend is a work of art, not a dumping ground for defective beans.
Myth vs Reality:
"Blends are lower quality than single-origin." Blends require masterful roasting to harmonize different beans. Many award-winning espressos are blends.
"Blends are just cost-cutting." Blends are intentional combinations to achieve a specific flavor profile—crema, body, acidity, and sweetness.
"Single-origin is always better." Single-origin espresso can be unbalanced—too acidic, too thin, or too flat. Blends can be more balanced and versatile.
