What the sorter can do
A calibrated sorter can identify beans or foreign material that differ visibly from the accepted range. This can increase consistency and reduce some types of physical defects at commercial scale.
What it cannot detect reliably
Many sensory problems are not visible. Fermentation defects, age, storage damage or subtle internal problems may pass a visual system. Human QC and cupping remain necessary.
Calibration matters
The machine needs settings appropriate to the incoming coffee. If thresholds are too broad, defects remain. If they are too strict, good coffee may be rejected and yield falls unnecessarily.

- What other sorting stages are included?
- How are rejects reviewed?
- Is final defect grading performed after sorting?
- Is the lot cupped after preparation?
