The word “certification” is often used too broadly in coffee.

A buyer may hear:

• Q certified;
• Fine Robusta certified;
• Organic certified;
• Fairtrade certified;
• Rainforest Alliance certified;
• producer certified;
• lot certified.

These claims do not mean the same thing.

This guide explains the historical CQI/UCDA Fine Robusta grading context and how buyers should read certification language in 2026.

Historical Fine Robusta quality standards

Coffee Quality Institute and Uganda Coffee Development Authority developed Fine Robusta standards and protocols for Robusta-specific physical and sensory evaluation.

“CQI currently administers the R-Grader program.”

It should not substitute for current QC.

Does Fine Robusta certification expire?

Historical sample records had specific dates and validity conditions.

The key principle is that coffee quality is lot-specific and time-specific.

Agricultural products change.

Later harvests should be evaluated again rather than assumed identical.

Is Fine Robusta a legal appellation?

No.

Fine Robusta is not a protected geographic appellation.

The botanical species is Coffea canephora.

Who can evaluate Canephora quality now?
