Understanding Robusta Quality Tiers Under the CQI System

Short answer: Commercial terms such as commodity, premium and Fine Robusta should not be treated as one timeless international grading ladder. The 2019 CQI/UCDA Fine Robusta protocol defined physical and sensory conditions for its own categories. A seller's use of 'premium' outside that document may mean something different. In 2026, ask which standard, edition, sample and date justify a tier; CQI stopped accepting new grading submissions in September 2025.

Begin with three different kinds of classification

A coffee can be classified by botanical species, commercial grade and sensory evaluation. 'Robusta' names a commonly traded type of Coffea canephora, not a quality verdict. Screen size, defect preparation or processing may define a commercial grade. A cupping report records sensory judgements on a specific sample. A label that mixes these dimensions may look clear to consumers but can be impossible for buyers to verify.

For example, one trader may call a large-screen, carefully sorted Robusta 'premium' because of its physical preparation. Another may use the term for a distinctive cup profile. A third may refer to a specific historical fine/premium protocol. Without a cited definition, those grades are not interchangeable. Procurement should request the actual specification rather than infer a universal score range from the product name.

What the 2019 CQI/UCDA document actually provided

The historical Fine Robusta Standards and Protocols described physical preparation, sensory evaluation and categories within that specified framework. Its Fine Robusta physical criteria included a 350 ± 0.2 g green sample, zero Category 1 full defects and no more than five Category 2 full defects. It also specified a separate roasted sample for quaker assessment, moisture limits and an 80.00-or-higher cupping threshold. These are historical method-specific figures, not an instruction to apply them blindly to every contract in 2026.

The official reference matters because shorthand can be wrong. A generic table claiming that all commodity coffee scores below 70, all premium coffee scores between 75 and 79.99 and all Fine Robusta automatically earns a fixed price premium is not a universal industry rule. Commodity coffees may not have been assessed with that same protocol at all. A score cannot be assigned retrospectively from how the coffee was marketed.

Why premium is a poor substitute for a written standard

Premium is useful only when its reference is defined. A contract should specify sample size and sampling plan, defect method, permissible moisture and other condition criteria, sensory assessment if required, origin documentation and remedies if the shipment fails. Commercial buyers may legitimately use another agreed standard rather than the historic CQI document. What matters is naming it and obtaining measurable evidence.

A carefully prepared coffee can fail the intended espresso profile even if its defect count is acceptable. A highly appealing sample might fail physical inspection. Those outcomes should be reported separately. Treat a marketing 'tier' as a summary of documented characteristics, never as evidence that all underlying tests were completed.

Scores do not describe economic value on their own

The final price also reflects availability, logistics, packaging, contractual risk, demand and the buyer's product use. A high historical score does not guarantee a particular market premium or profitable farming. A seller who claims an automatic percentage price uplift should show transaction data, matching grades and the relevant period. Without that evidence, a tier is not a price forecast.

For buyers, compare the total landed cost and repeatability alongside cup quality. A slightly lower sensory result may satisfy a production beverage more consistently, while a distinctive lot may be useful for a small retail release. These are application decisions, not new category definitions.

What changed with the 2025 programme transition?

CQI's public database explicitly says new sample submissions ended on 30 September 2025. The Specialty Coffee Association began administering the revised Q Grader programme on 1 October 2025, with Coffee Value Assessment at its core. CVA separates physical, descriptive, affective and extrinsic dimensions. Older CQI labels remain interpretable when attached to genuine documents, but they should not be described as current CQI intake services or automatically converted into a CVA grade.

A modern evaluator may provide detailed observations without using an old all-in-one tier. Buyers should retain the original method and make their own acceptance criteria explicit. If a supplier cites a past Q certificate, verify the sample, date and whether that documentation has any contractual relevance to the current offer.

A tier-comparison worksheet

Create columns for the seller's exact wording; cited standard and year; lot identifier; crop period; physical method and result; sensory method and result; evaluator; sample date; offered quantity if verified; intended application; and contractual acceptance. Mark fields 'not supplied' when missing. Do not fill an empty score cell with an estimated value because a bag says premium.

Compare two offers only after establishing whether they have equivalent documentation. If one is a type sample and the other a pre-shipment sample, their different purpose belongs in the decision. If either coffee has changed through blending, re-sorting or storage, request a fresh relevant assessment.

Cambodia-specific application

A Mondulkiri origin description can help buyers understand place, but cannot grant a whole region a quality tier. Identify the actual Cambodian lot and its evaluation. Is premium always 75–79.99? No. Specify the particular grading scheme and edition before quoting a range.

Is an 80-point score enough on its own? Not under the historical Fine Robusta protocol; physical conditions also applied.

Can a 2024 grade certify a new harvest? No. Evaluate the identifiable current lot.

Must buyers pay more for a named tier? Price is negotiated and context-specific, not dictated by a blog classification.
