Fine Robusta vs Commercial Robusta: How Historical CQI Grading Drew the Line

Fine Robusta and commercial Robusta were historically separated through more than marketing language.

The CQI/UCDA Fine Robusta framework created a structured way to evaluate physical preparation and sensory quality in Coffea canephora.

That historical distinction remains important.

But this page should not be read as a description of the current 2026 institutional Q certification system.

Coffee Quality Institute states that it stopped accepting coffee samples for grading on 30 September 2025. The Specialty Coffee Association launched the updated Q Grader program under SCA management on 1 October 2025.

This page therefore explains how the historical system drew the line, and how buyers should interpret those older records now.

A current buyer should still evaluate the actual lot.

Why flavor stereotypes should not define the distinction

Older articles often say:

commercial Robusta = rubber, earth, harsh bitterness

Fine Robusta = chocolate, nuts, sweetness.

That is too simplistic.

Defects can occur in any species.

Positive cocoa or nut notes can occur in both commercial and higher-quality Canephora.

The difference should be based on evidence, not stereotype.

Suppose a producer had an 84-point Q Robusta result several years ago.

That result demonstrates historical quality capability.

It does not prove that the current crop is 84.

Current evidence should include:

• current physical condition;

• current storage;
• current lot identity.

Historical evidence and current evidence should remain separate.

What changed after September 2025

CQI stopped accepting samples for grading on 30 September 2025.

SCA launched the updated Q Grader program on 1 October 2025.

The current environment is aligned with Coffee Value Assessment.

CVA distinguishes physical, descriptive, affective and extrinsic dimensions.

That makes it even more important not to reduce current Canephora quality to one old threshold.

How buyers should compare Fine and commercial Robusta now

Use a multi-part comparison.

Identity

• lot.

Physical

• water activity;
• storage.

Sensory

• descriptive profile;
• cleanliness;
• preference;

What this means for Cambodian coffee

Cambodia Robusta should not be positioned through the claim that all local coffee qualifies as Fine Robusta.

A stronger origin strategy uses documented samples and repeated data.

• producer profiles;
• harvest data;
• processing data;
• physical QC;

Why commercial grade and sensory quality can overlap

Commercial grading systems are often designed for trade efficiency.

They may prioritize measurable physical characteristics such as defects, size and preparation.

Sensory evaluation asks a different question.

A lot can satisfy a commercial export grade and still show strong sensory quality.

Another lot can look physically acceptable but taste ordinary or defective.

This is why buyers should not assume that commercial classification and sensory quality are perfect opposites.

A buyer comparing Fine and commercial Robusta should define:

Avoid present-tense wording that implies the historical system is still the current institutional certification environment.

The strongest current distinction is not:

commercial = bad / Fine = good.
