Introduction: A Small Exporter with Big Ambitions
Cambodia is not yet a major player in the global coffee export market. But that is beginning to change. With growing international recognition for its quality beans and ambitious government plans to expand production, Cambodia's coffee export sector is poised for significant growth.
Current Export Data
Cambodia's coffee, tea, and spice exports reached USD 1.169 million in December 2025, up from USD 625,040 in November 2025. While these numbers remain modest compared to regional giants like Vietnam, they represent steady growth and increasing international interest.
The primary export destinations include neighboring countries in the region, with some beans making their way to more distant markets. Currently, most Cambodian coffee beans are still exported raw, with value-added processing happening abroad.
The Vietnamese Connection
Vietnam plays a significant role in Cambodia's coffee story—both as a competitor and as a destination for Cambodian beans. Some of Cambodia's coffee production is exported to Vietnam, where it may be blended or processed before reaching international markets.
However, this relationship is complex. Vietnam is also Cambodia's primary source of imported coffee, with exports to Cambodia surging 78% in volume and 114% in value in the first seven months of 2025. Cambodia's challenge is to reduce this import dependence while building its own export capacity.
The Fine Robusta Opportunity
The most exciting development in Cambodia's coffee export story is the emergence of Fine Robusta. In September 2025, KOFI announced the launch of Bousra Coffee, a blend that was classified as Fine Robusta by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI)—the first time in history that Cambodian coffee has received such recognition from an international institute.
This certification opens doors to premium export markets. Fine Robusta commands significantly higher prices than commodity Robusta, making it economically viable to export to discerning international buyers. The blend—combining Fine Robusta (50%) with South American Arabica (50%)—demonstrates that Cambodian coffee can compete at the highest levels.
Quality Certifications: Building Trust in Export Markets
Beyond CQI recognition, Bousra Coffee has also been certified both nationally and internationally, including GHPs (Good Hygiene Practices), HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), and ISO 22000:2018 (food safety management).
These certifications are crucial for export success. International buyers, particularly in Europe, Japan, and North America, require documented quality and safety standards. Cambodia's growing portfolio of certifications signals that the country is serious about becoming a reliable coffee supplier.
The EUDR Challenge
European markets represent a significant opportunity for Cambodian coffee, but they also come with regulatory hurdles. The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) came into effect on December 30, 2025, requiring coffee exporters to demonstrate that their beans were not produced on deforested land. Cambodian coffee exporters will need to prepare compliance documentation to access this lucrative market.
Strategic Recommendations for Export Growth
- Focus on Quality, Not Volume
Cambodia cannot compete with Vietnam on volume. The strategy should be to establish a reputation for exceptional quality that commands premium prices. Fine Robusta certification is a strong start.
- Develop Processing Capacity
Currently, most Cambodian beans are exported raw. Developing in-country roasting, packaging, and value-added processing would capture more value and create more jobs.
- Build Brand Cambodia
"Coffee from Cambodia" needs to become a recognized origin designation. This requires consistent quality, effective marketing, and partnerships with international roasters who can tell Cambodia's story.
- Pursue Niche Markets
Specialty coffee, organic coffee, and single-origin offerings are growing segments. Cambodia's small size is actually an advantage here—it can position itself as a boutique origin rather than a bulk supplier.
- Invest in Traceability
Consumers and buyers increasingly want to know where their coffee comes from. Blockchain and other traceability technologies can help Cambodia differentiate its beans in crowded markets.
The Road Ahead
Cambodia's coffee export journey is just beginning. With the Cambodia Coffee Association targeting 7,000 hectares of cultivation and international recognition for quality already achieved, the foundation is being laid for significant export growth in the coming years.
The question is not whether Cambodia can export coffee—it already does. The question is whether Cambodia can build a coffee export sector that is sustainable, profitable, and globally recognized for excellence.
