The practical lesson is not that every shipment will develop mold. It is that temperature and relative humidity changes can create local moisture problems inside a container, especially near walls, ceilings, and other zones affected by condensation.
A sealed ocean container can cross very different climates. Day-night temperature cycles and route changes may create a much more variable environment than a warehouse.
Condensation: why apparently dry coffee can arrive wet
Container condensation occurs when warm, moisture-containing air contacts colder surfaces and water condenses. Coffee bags close to those surfaces may be exposed even when the cargo was dry at loading.
Risk management can include:
- loading coffee at appropriate stable condition;
- inspecting the container for existing moisture and leaks;
