How to Read a Q Robusta Evaluation Record

Fine Robusta has an important technical history, but buyers need to separate that history from the current coffee-evaluation system. This page explains the historical Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) and Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) Fine Robusta framework so older certificates, research papers, competition records, and supplier documents can be interpreted correctly in 2026.

• “Historical score” when referring to a dated result from before the transition.

What the historical Fine Robusta framework tried to solve

Commodity Robusta had often been traded primarily through physical preparation, screen size, defect counts, origin, and market price. That approach did not provide a detailed sensory vocabulary for higher-quality Canephora.

The historical Fine Robusta framework created a more structured way to evaluate a Robusta sample. It aimed to make buyers and producers look beyond the species label and document both physical and sensory performance.

That was strategically important because it made it possible to discuss quality within Coffea canephora rather than treating all Robusta as one homogeneous category.

The historical framework should therefore be understood as part of the development of professional Canephora evaluation.

Physical assessment was separate from sensory assessment

One of the most useful ideas in the historical system was that a good-tasting cup did not automatically erase physical problems in the green coffee.

Physical assessment considered factors such as visible defects, moisture, sample preparation, and other measurable characteristics. Sensory assessment considered the cup.

These are different evidence layers.

A sample can be physically clean but sensorially ordinary. Another sample can taste promising but have preparation or stability problems that make it unsuitable for a larger commercial program.

This separation remains useful in 2026 even though the institutional framework has changed.

The SCA Coffee Value Assessment now explicitly separates physical, descriptive, affective, and extrinsic information instead of asking one number to represent everything a buyer may value.

What historical “80+” language actually means

Many older Fine Robusta materials refer to an 80-point threshold under the historical system.

That number should be interpreted narrowly.

It means that a specific sample achieved a result under the named evaluation framework at a specific time. It does not mean:

• the farm is permanently “80+”;
• every later harvest will repeat the same result;
• every bag in a commercial shipment is identical to the evaluated sample;
• the origin as a whole has that score;
• a current 2026 evaluation must use the same institutional workflow.

A historical score is evidence about a historical sample.

The strongest procurement use is to combine it with current sample evaluation, lot identity, physical condition, storage information, process documentation, and delivered-lot verification.

Why a score cannot replace lot identity

Buyers often remember the score and forget the sample.

That is backwards.

A useful record should connect the result to a defined coffee: producer or supplier where available, region, harvest period, process, lot code, sample date, and evaluation date.

Without those identifiers, a score can drift into a marketing claim that no longer has a reliable connection to the coffee being sold.

A strong historical Cambodian result is meaningful because it proves that a specific sample achieved a defined level under a defined system. Why old CQI records still matter

The 2025 transition did not make older records worthless.

Historical records can still help a buyer understand:

1. how a sample was evaluated at the time;
2. which physical and sensory criteria were documented;
3. how a producer or origin performed in a previous harvest;
4. whether a supplier has a history of submitting coffees for structured evaluation;
5. how quality claims evolved over several years.

Their value is historical and comparative.

They should not be presented as proof of current certification status unless the relevant current institution and current document support that claim.

The current 2026 Q Grader context

The current Q Grader program is managed by the Specialty Coffee Association.

SCA states that its updated program evaluates coffee through the Coffee Value Assessment framework. CVA separates four complementary assessment types:

• Physical assessment — observable physical characteristics such as defects, moisture, size, and color.
• Descriptive assessment — sensory description, including aroma, flavor, texture, and aftertaste.
• Affective assessment — an evaluator’s impression of quality or preference.
• Extrinsic assessment — information beyond the cup, such as origin, traceability, processing, and certifications.

This matters because modern quality communication is moving away from the idea that one score alone explains the entire value of a coffee.

A buyer can still use scores where relevant, but the supporting data should remain visible.

Historical Robusta-specific sensory language

The older Fine Robusta cupping form included Robusta-specific concepts such as salt/acid and bitter/sweet relationships.

These terms were useful because Canephora should not be judged simply by asking whether it behaves exactly like Arabica.

Historical records may also include fragrance/aroma, flavor, aftertaste, mouthfeel, balance, uniformity, clean cup, overall impression, and defect observations.

When reading an older report, interpret those attributes inside the method that produced them. Do not silently convert an old CQI/UCDA score into a current SCA/CVA assessment.

A 2026 buyer workflow for historical records

When a supplier provides an older Fine Robusta certificate or score sheet, use this sequence.

Step 1: identify the document

Record the institution, protocol, date, sample identity, and any certificate or database reference.

Step 2: verify the coffee identity

Check whether the current offered lot is the same harvest, a later harvest from the same producer, or merely a coffee from the same origin.

These are not equivalent.

Step 3: separate historical evidence from current evidence

Put historical scores in one section of the procurement file and current physical, sensory, and commercial information in another.

Step 4: evaluate the current sample

Cup the current sample using a clearly stated method. Record roast, rest, water, grind, vessels, timing, cup count, and sensory observations.

Step 5: verify physical condition

Measure the attributes relevant to the purchase, such as moisture, water activity where available, visible defects, odor, stability, and preparation consistency.

Step 6: verify delivered-lot continuity

If the order proceeds, compare the shipment or pre-shipment sample against the approved sample.

Historical evidence is valuable only when current supply is also controlled.

Historical certification is not a permanent farm label

One of the easiest mistakes in coffee marketing is turning a dated evaluation into a permanent identity.

A farm may have produced an excellent lot in one year and a weaker lot the next. Weather, cherry maturity, picking labor, fermentation, drying, storage, plant health, and sorting can all change.

Therefore Origin Coffee Cambodia (OCC.)’s rule is:

Quality belongs to the evaluated coffee and the evidence behind it, not permanently to the farm name, province, or country.

This protects producers as well as buyers. It prevents one weak season from permanently defining an origin, and it prevents one strong season from being reused indefinitely as proof of every later shipment.

What this means for Cambodia Fine Robusta

Cambodia can benefit from its historical Q Robusta records, but the strongest long-term strategy is not to repeat old scores forever.

The stronger strategy is to build a multi-year evidence chain:

• identify lots clearly;
• document harvest and process;
• record physical condition;
• record sensory results using the named current method;
• preserve historical documents;
• compare harvests;
• disclose uncertainty;
• verify what is actually delivered.

Over time, that produces a more credible origin story than one certificate.
