Introduction: A Commitment to the Future
As Cambodia's coffee industry expands, sustainability has become a central concern. Farmers, companies, and international organizations are working together to ensure that coffee cultivation protects the environment, supports communities, and produces high-quality beans for generations to come.
Climate-Smart Agriculture
Climate change poses significant challenges to coffee cultivation worldwide, and Cambodia is no exception. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and more frequent droughts threaten both yields and quality.
To address these challenges, farmers are being encouraged to adopt climate-smart practices. With support from SNV through the Dutch Fund for Climate and Development, companies like KOFI have introduced agroforestry models, expanded farmer training, and invested in new processing and nursery facilities. These initiatives focus on developing a sustainable, climate-resilient coffee production model.
CamGAP Certification: Recognizing Good Agricultural Practices
In a significant step for sustainable coffee farming in Cambodia, coffee farmers in Mondulkiri province were awarded CamGAP (Cambodian Good Agricultural Practices) certificates. This certification recognizes agricultural practices that contribute to boosting sustainable quality coffee.
The CamGAP certification helps farmers improve their practices, access better markets, and demonstrate their commitment to quality and sustainability.
WWF Training Initiatives
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Cambodia has conducted key training initiatives focused on enhancing farmers' technical knowledge and practical skills in proper harvesting methods. Participants were trained in techniques designed to minimize post-harvest losses and simultaneously boost the quality and productivity of their coffee beans.
These training programs are implemented in collaboration with KOFI and the Mondulkiri Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Three Corner Coffee: Eco-Friendly Innovation
Three Corner Coffee, a Phnom Penh-based café and roaster, has introduced innovative eco-friendly practices, including a jar-refill system at their café and the use of recyclable materials at events. The company partners with local farmers to boost incomes and preserve Cambodia's historic coffee legacy.
Agroforestry: A Model for the Future
Agroforestry – integrating trees and shrubs into coffee plantations – offers multiple benefits. It provides shade for coffee plants, improves soil health, enhances biodiversity, and creates additional sources of income for farmers. Through contract farming and agroforestry practices, Cambodia is building a more sustainable coffee sector.
The Path to Sustainability
Sustainable coffee farming in Cambodia is still developing, but the foundation is being built. Through certification programs, training initiatives, and innovative business models, Cambodia's coffee sector is moving toward a future where quality and sustainability go hand in hand.
